Competent Person (Water): Engineering Essentials

This training course caters to individuals engaged in the design, operation, and maintenance of engineering services, encompassing technicians, maintenance, and operational staff within healthcare premises. It is applicable to those involved in estate management, engineering services and contracting companies looking to either refresh their existing knowledge or embark on new water related engineering activities within the sector.

The course will cover engineering aspects essential for working on water systems and the prevention of
contamination. Engineering teams will benefit from learning best practices in water hygiene techniques when working with potable water distribution systems in accordance with Health & Safety Executive
Legionnaires’ disease. The control of legionella bacteria in water systems Approved Code of Practice and guidance” (ACoP L8, 2013), “Health & Safety Guidance Legionnaires’ disease Technical guidance” (HSG 274, 2014), Health Technical Memorandum 04-01, Safe Water in Healthcare (HTM 04-01, 2016) and British Standards.

You will be able to:
• Know the resources available (Official guidance, best practice documents and standards)
• Understand water system design
• Understand water system components and essential aspects
• Recognise potential sources of contamination within a system
• Understand the guidance with respect to monitoring & maintenance
• Implement safe and hygienic working practices

The course consists of 5 modules delivered over an 8 hour period with a final assessment. The modular approach allows a high level of flexibility to meet delegate availability. The entire training course will be delivered by a Harper Water training facilitator, the delegate must have completed the course and returned a completed assessment with a >65% pass mark to be successful.

This course assumes a basic level of awareness and education on Legionella and other waterborne pathogens present within domestic in-premise water systems. We would recommend that this course follow the Harper Water ‘In-Premise Water: Engineering, Microbiological & Hygienic Fundamentals’ course for those wishing to further develop their technical skills in water engineering & hygiene.
